How to Keep Your Passion for Writing — Even When it’s Your Job
Work is work. Joy is joy. Writing can be both.
I write for a living.
Many of you do, too.
I knew I wanted to be a writer since I was about seven years old.
As a kid, I didn’t have to think about writing for other people, writing content I didn’t love with all my heart, or writing to pay bills.
I was pretty sure writers just wrote fiction novels and made millions.
When the time came for me to make my own, adult money, I knew I couldn’t do anything but write. Any other job wouldn’t work for me.
While I write what I love (for the most part), I’ve had my fair share of articles, blog posts, Instagram captions, and how-to jobs that didn’t exactly spark joy.
I vividly remember writing 30k words for a (very nice, very helpful) client and experiencing a strange, awful feeling for the first time.
I was writing, and I didn’t like it.
I realized if I was going to continue to write more than just fiction novels, I needed to find a way to keep my passion for writing, avoid burnout, and definitely avoid hatred at all costs.
